What does EPNS mean on silver items?

Although my interest primarily relates to pieces made of sterling, I receive many questions about silver plate items. Perhaps the most common is, "What does 'EPNS' mean?"
The answer is that it's an indicator that a piece is made of silver plate. Other similar terms are:

A. We suggest entering some unique identifying information (perhaps your first name) in the "Name/URL" field. You do not have to add a URL.

Q. Why don't I see my comment appear immediately?
A. New comments are sent to the moderator for approval before they are published.

Q. What is a "Label"?
A. Each post is assigned one or more descriptive labels. The resulting list of labels serves as an index to related posts. By clicking on a label, you will see only the posts that have been assigned that label.

Q. Why do you allow advertisements on your site?
A. We thought long and hard before adding them and finally decided that they would actually provide a service to readers. Google analyzes the content of the site and only lists ads that directly relate to the content.

Q. I have other questions. How do I get answers?
A. Send an email to the moderator.
